Updating my chandelier

Last month, I went kinda crazy at Pottery Barn, taking advantage of a double points sale, yeah, baby!  I got my rewards certificate in the mail and set about to blow it all on a new dining room chandelier:

To my untrained eye, these were both so similar to each other, and to the one I already have.  Sooooo, I thought I’d try my hand at refashioning my existing dining room chandelier.  Here’s what it looked like before:

House 055

I didn’t buy this, it came with the house, probably original, and therefore at least 40 years old!  Like the rest of us over 40, she was doing fine, and working quite well, thank-you very much.  She just needed a little bit of updating.  I disconnected it, taped the over the white candles, and spray-painted it with a black semi-gloss.  And, yes, I cleaned the crystals (covered in construction dust, we’re having much work done on the house right now).

Here are some after shots:

I re-hung just a few of the crystals:

It’s been raining here today, so I don’t have a lot of good images.  I think it’s an improvement, but I don’t think I’m quite finished.  I’m considering adding a big drum shade like one of these:

Aren’t these cool? I think that middle one is my favorite (images from Lamps Plus).  Leave me a comment if you know of a good place to get one of these shades!

  1. Well done! The black really updates it. What did it look like with all the crystals put back on? A bit over the top?
