Pattern: Simplicity 4940

Fabric:  stretch velveteen and poly satin from Joanne’s

This pattern is for a long princess-line dress with sleeve and collar variations.  Also included is an over-vest.  I took lots of liberties with this pattern, using the sleeve extensions from view C and eliminating the collar piece.  I lined the sleeves with satin and made the channel for the draw-string (pattern instructions have you finishing the sleeve by turning under a hem-no lining).  I eliminated the back zipper since I used stretch velveteen.  The cute little gold lace and ric-rac details came from my stash.

The drawstring is the same satin.   I cut 2 inch bias strips, sewed them into tubes and turned them right sides out.

I sewed little strips of ric-rac at the mid-arm sleeve seam.  I also eliminated the neck facings.  I stay-stitched the neck edge and added bias stay tape, and turned under the seam allowance and stitched:

I serged all the seams using wooly nylon in both loopers.  I also reinforced the shoulder and sleeve seams.  These long billowy-type sleeves add a LOT of extra weight to the garment, stressing the shoulder and sleeve seams.  Extra reinforcement in these areas is really important.  This is my costume for my church’s production of “A Little Knight Music” .  It’s a ren-faire type holiday madrigal dinner (think Medieval Times without the horses).  It’s a two-night production in December-how’s that for finishing early?

  1. I like. I’ve always wanted to make one of these ren/period dresses, but what’s the point when there’s no place to go once you’re dressed up? I love the colour of yours, and the gold trim and satin is beautiful. You did such a wonderful job!
