Last Weekend

This past weekend was the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo.  I’ve been going to these every year for the past 10 years or so.  I didn’t get much, a few gadgets, a zipper grab bag from the Vogue Fabrics booth, but that’s all.  I’d say that this year’s expo was a bit of “dud” for me;  but that’s just because I’m not in the quilting mode right now.  Probably for a quilting enthusiast, it was a great time, because there were a lot of great looking quilt booths.  But, we went and had a great time.  Heck, you know the saying:  “A bad day shopping is better than….”

The best thing I did this weekend was make a couple of Duct Tape Doubles with my Mom.  Before we started, we looked at a few tutorials on You Tube, read a few articles from past issues of Sew News (August 2006 issue, if you’re interested) and Threads.  Here’s Mom:

March1 005       March1 004

And me:

March1 008     March1 007

After 3 layers of tape, we then cut the form off and stuffed them with fiberfill:

March1 006   March1 012

Here’s a few pointers, based on our experience (in case you need any more):

  • At LEAST 3 layers of tape, everywhere, all over.  We tried an earlier version and didn’t use near enough tape, which caused the whole thing to collapse.  The more tape, the better.
  • Keep the tape very smooth; take the time to avoid wrinkles when taping, even if it means ripping it off and re-applying.  It’s a pain, I know.
  • After standing for so long getting taped, Mom and I both started getting dizzy, even with full stomachs and proper hydration.  The old adage is true, don’t lock your knees while standing for long periods of time.
  • I tried the spray insulation foam as filler; I didn’t find it better than plain ole’ fiber fill from Joanne’s.
  • Getting taped is a real PITA, but the finished result is worth it!  Future fitting adjustments I’m going to try (whenever my sewing mojo returns) are forward shoulder adjustment and flat seat adjustment.

Grab yourself a partner and try making one of these!
